Chemical in fruit and veg can block leukaemia cell division

A chemical found in some fruit and vegetables, apigenin, has been shown to have anticancer activity in two different types of leukaemia cell lines, according to research online this week in Cell Death & Disease. The results provide tentative evidence that apigenin could hold promise for preventing leukaemia, although they also suggest it could reduce the effectiveness of some types of chemotherapy.
 
Maikel Peppelenbosch and colleagues found that the dietary flavonoid apigenin reduces survival in leukaemia cell lines - one similar to myeloid leukaemia and another erythroid-like line. Apigenin stops cell division in both cell lines - but at different stages - and leads to cell death in the myeloid cell line. In the erythroid cell line apigenin also leads to a process known as autophagy, which has been linked to chemotherapy resistance. Indeed, apigenin was found to reduce the effects of the common chemotherapeutic vincristine in erythroid cells.

These results suggest that apigenin could be used to help prevent leukaemia, but as it could interfere with treatment it probably wouldn't be useful to treat the disease itself.

Resumindo em portguês, o meu orientador, Maikel, foi convidado a dar uma entrevista na Radio 1, em rede nacional a respeito do meu trabalho que foi recentemente publicado na revista "Cell Death and Disease". O trabalho trata-se basicamente sobre o flavonoide apigenina, encontrado na dieta humana foi capaz de bloquear a divisão celular de dois tipos células leucêmicas.Mostramos evidencias de que apigenina pode ser útil na prevenção de leucemia, mas dependendo do tipo de leucemia poderia diminuir o efeito da quimioterapia.

Fiquei assustada quando a Gwenny me falou da entrevista do Maikel, mas depois a ideia comecou a assentar e até que fiquei feliz. Sempre é bom ter nosso trabalho reconhecido e ainda mais a nível nacional! Queria que fosse no Brasil, ai pelo menos eu ia entender o que seria dito na entrevista!! hehehe
Agora tenho que manter o ritmo, trabalhar mais para poder tentar contribuir um pouquinho mais.
